Isaiah 64

64 ^(A)Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
    ^(B)that the mountains might quake at your presence—
²^[a] as when fire kindles brushwood
    and the fire causes water to boil—
^(C)to make your name known to your adversaries,
    and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
³^(D)When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
    you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
⁴^(E)From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
^(F)no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.
⁵You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?^[b]
⁶^(G)We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
^(H)We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
⁷^(I)There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have made us melt in^[c] the hand of our iniquities.

⁸^(J)But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
    ^(K)we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    ^(L)we are all the work of your hand.
⁹^(M)Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
    ^(N)and remember not iniquity forever.
    Behold, please look, we are all your people.
¹⁰^(O)Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
    Zion has become a wilderness,
    Jerusalem a desolation.
¹¹^(P)Our holy and beautiful^[d] house,
    where our fathers praised you,
has been burned by fire,
    and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
¹²^(Q)Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord?
    Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

Wait for the God of Salvation

7 Woe is me! For I have become
    ^(A)as when the summer fruit has been gathered,
    as when the grapes have been gleaned:
there is no cluster to eat,
    no ^(B)first-ripe fig that my soul desires.
²^(C)The godly has perished from the earth,
    and ^(D)there is no one upright among mankind;
^(E)they all lie in wait for blood,
    and ^(F)each hunts the other with a net.
³^(G)Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well;
    ^(H)the prince and ^(I)the judge ask for a bribe,
and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul;
    thus they weave it together.
⁴The best of them is ^(J)like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of ^(K)your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    ^(L)now their confusion is at hand.
⁵^(M)Put no trust in a neighbor;
    have no confidence in a friend;
guard ^(N)the doors of your mouth
    from her who lies in your arms;^[a]
⁶for ^(O)the son treats the father with contempt,
    the daughter rises up against her mother,
the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    ^(P)a man's enemies are the men of his own house.
⁷But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    ^(Q)I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

⁸^(R)Rejoice not over me, O ^(S)my enemy;
    ^(T)when I fall, I shall rise;
^(U)when I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be a light to me.
⁹^(V)I will bear the indignation of the Lord
    because I have sinned against him,
until ^(W)he pleads my cause
    and executes judgment for me.
^(X)He will bring me out to the light;
    I shall look upon his vindication.

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

7 After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, ^(A)he entered Capernaum. ²Now a centurion had a servant^[a] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. ³When the centurion^[b] heard about Jesus, ^(B)he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. ⁴And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, ^(C)“He is worthy to have you do this for him, ⁵for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us ^(D)our synagogue.” ⁶And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, ^(E)do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. ⁷Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But ^(F)say the word, and let my servant be healed. ⁸For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” ⁹When Jesus heard these things, ^(G)he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such ^(H)faith.” ¹⁰And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

I Am the Light of the World

¹²^(A)Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ^(B)“I am the light of the world. Whoever ^(C)follows me will not ^(D)walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” ¹³So the Pharisees said to him, ^(E)“You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” ¹⁴Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, ^(F)my testimony is true, for I know ^(G)where I came from and ^(H)where I am going, but ^(I)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. ¹⁵^(J)You judge according to the flesh; ^(K)I judge no one. ¹⁶Yet even if I do judge, ^(L)my judgment is true, for ^(M)it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father^[a] who sent me. ¹⁷^(N)In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. ¹⁸I am the one who bears witness about myself, and ^(O)the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” ¹⁹They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, ^(P)“You know neither me nor my Father. ^(Q)If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” ²⁰These words he spoke in ^(R)the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but ^(S)no one arrested him, because ^(T)his hour had not yet come.

²¹So he said to them again, ^(U)“I am going away, and ^(V)you will seek me, and ^(W)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” ²²So the Jews said, ^(X)“Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” ²³He said to them, ^(Y)“You are from below; I am from above. ^(Z)You are of this world; ^(AA)I am not of this world. ²⁴I told you that you ^(AB)would die in your sins, for ^(AC)unless you believe that ^(AD)I am he you will die in your sins.” ²⁵So they said to him, ^(AE)“Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. ²⁶I have much to say about you and much to judge, but ^(AF)he who sent me is true, and I declare ^(AG)to the world ^(AH)what I have heard from him.” ²⁷They did not understand that ^(AI)he had been speaking to them about the Father. ²⁸So Jesus said to them, “When you have ^(AJ)lifted up the Son of Man, ^(AK)then you will know that ^(AL)I am he, and that ^(AM)I do nothing on my own authority, but ^(AN)speak just as the Father taught me. ²⁹And ^(AO)he who sent me is with me. ^(AP)He has not left me alone, for ^(AQ)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” ³⁰As he was saying these things, ^(AR)many believed in him.
